History

Renouf Publishing Company Limited was founded by Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Michael Renouf in 1888. In addition to its publishing activities, the company was the Canadian distributor for a number of prestigious science and technical publishers such as John Wiley & Sons, Longman, Green & Company, Elsevier Science Publishers and Springer-Verlag.

The company remained in the hands of the Renouf family until it was purchased by Erland Hennings, a former vice-president with Volkswagen's Mexican division, in 1970. In 1972, the Canadian Government's Queen's Printer decided to discontinue the responsibility for the marketing and distribution of publications for several International Organizations and Renouf assumed those responsibilities. The government also closed its retail outlets that same year and Renouf took over their operations in Toronto and Montreal.

In 1986 the company was sold to a group of investors that included its current president Gordon Grahame. Gordon figuratively worked his way through the company for he started in the shipping room while attending college, spent three summers in the order department and was hired full-time as the company's controller when he finished university. Under his direction the company shifted its focus to making governmental and international publications more accessible.

Due to increasing demand, Renouf established an office in the United States in 1999. The company's sales along with its reputation for providing excellent customer-service have continued to grow and it is now the largest distributor of international publications in North America.
